The district of Aizawl is located at an altitude of 3,500 ft above sea level. Lying north of the Tropic of Cancer, it is flanked by Bangladesh and
Tripura in the west and Myanmar in the east. It is blessed with exotic natural beauty. The district stands on a high ridge, fringed in the east by the sylvan valley of river Tlawng and in the north bounded by the craggy hills of Durtlang. This hilly district perches precariously on the steep slopes of a sharp ridge, straddling the watershed between the Tlawng and the
Tuirial river valleys.
Aizawl District is famous for its rich aborigine cultural variety and handicrafts. It has a population of around 0.2 million. The people are Christians by faith and most of them speak English and Mizo. They celebrate festivals with traditional gaiety and pomp. The important places of tourist interest in Aizawl include the Museum at Macdonald’s Hill, the mini Zoological Garden, Bethlehem Vengthlang, Durtlangs Hills and
Bung Picnic Spot. Best time to visit is from October to March.
