Silchar, the headquarters of
Cachar District in
Assam, lies on the banks of the
Barak River. Silchar is 240 km south-east of
Shillong.
It is considered as the second largest city in the North-East. From here, one can have spectacular views of the surrounding ranges and valleys. Silchar is the center for high education in north-eastern region and is also a commercial center of the state.
Bhuban Hill, Bhubaneswar Temple and temple of Sri Kancha Kanti Devi at Udharband are the attractions around Silchar. Silchar is also the gateway to Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur and Meghalaya.
Silchar Airport is about 24 km from city center. Silchar Railway Station is a prominent railway station in north-eastern India. National Highway 53 and National Highway 54 pass through Silchar. Guwahati is around 515 km north of Silchar.
