Chisak Megam Tribe

Lyngngam is a tribe inhabiting parts of West Khasi Hills District of Meghalaya. Lyngngams consider their ancestors to belong to the Khasi tribe, from which the Garo tribe emerged. The tribe is also referred by name, Chisak Megam.

Living in isolation, this tribe has developed its own traditions. The members speak their own Lyngngam dialect. They have their own indigenous songs, dances and music, which are mostly performed during the functions and ceremonies having a religious significance. However some aspects such as political setup, social institutions, marriages, method of inheritance and religious beliefs have remained unchanged from the days when this tribe was under the control of the Garos.
