Zeliangrong Tribe comprises Rongmei (Kabuis), Liangmai and Zemei (Kacha Nagas) groups, inhabiting the
Tamenglong District of western
Manipur. Kabui villages are found in the plains of Manipur,
Assam and few in
Nagaland. The Zemei and Liangmei are separated by rivers and mountains. Their dialects also differ from one another. They speak Liangmai and use Roman script. History depicts the close relation of the Zeliangrong with the Meiteis. Tamenglong is the headquarters of the tribe. They cultivate potato, ginger and pineapple. Their main crafts are cane and bamboo works. The renowned political movement, ‘Zeliangrong movement of the 1927-32 led by Jadonang and
Rani Gaidinliu is well celebrated among the tribes.
