Ramtek is a historic site situated in
Nagpur District, of
Maharashtra. This pilgrimage center, dotted with 600 year old temples surrounding the hill, is popularly known as the ‘Hill of
Ram’. Ramtek is 58 km north-east of
Nagpur.
Ramtek gets the name as the place was graced by the holy feet of Lord Ram and Sita, his consort.
It was this pristine surroundings that inspired poet Kalidasa to pen his famous work, Meghdootam. Kalidas Festival, an annual event celebrated here in his memory, during the month of November is one of the richest cultural events in the state.
Major point of attraction here are the
Ram Temple, the 14th century Lakshman Temple and the Kalidasa Memorial, situated on the top of the hill. Shri Ramtek Teerth, a famous Jain temple situated on the outskirts of Ramtek town, is also worth visiting. There are 27 Brahmanical style temples on top of the hill. Other places of tourist interest include Ambala Lake, Nagardhan Fort, Museum at Mansar, Ramsagar Lake and Khindsey Lake.
Ram Navami is celebrated here amidst much pomp and splendor.
The nearest airport is at Nagpur.
Ramtek Railway Station is a prominent railhead of South Central Railway.
