Gavilgad is located on the
Chikhaldara plateau in
Amaravati District of
Maharashtra. The place is famous for the Gavilgad Fort, built by the Gavlis or cowherds in the 12th/13th centuries. The fort was subsequently ruled by the
Gonds and then the mighty
Mughals. The fort is now in a dilapidated state due to age and neglect even though its walls and ramparts still stand as a testimony to its old glory and grandeur.
Badnera Junction Railway Station, served by the Central Railways, is the nearest railhead.
