Latur, the administrative headquarters of
Latur District, is a historic town situated 369 km east of
Pune, in the Marathwada region of
Maharashtra. It is one of the leading centers of trade and commerce in the state.
Main point of attraction of the town is the Ganjgolai Chowk. It was designed by the town planner Shri Faiyajuddin. The Golai is a two-storeyed structure with a shrine of Goddess Ambabai in the middle of the chowk. There are 16 roads connecting to the Golai, with exclusive markets for different commodities along each road. Other places worth visiting in the town are the Siddheswar Temple, the temples of Ramlingeswar, Bhuteswar and Keshavraj and the Darga of Surat Shahvalli.
Latur is connected with the Kurudwadi Junction Railway Station by a narrow gauge line. Nearest broad gauge railhead is the Latur Road, on the
Manmad - Secunderabad line, 32 km from Latur town.
