Paithan

Paithan, the erstwhile capital city of Satvahanas, is situated 56 km south of Aurangabad, in Maharashtra. Situated on the banks of Godavari River, it is one of Marthwada's most ancient towns. Paithan is renowned for the Paithani Saree with exquisite Zari Embroidery.

This ancient town has several shrines along the river bank connected with the lives of the Hindu Saints. The ancient wall with nine gate ways which once surrounded the town is now in a totally dilapidated condition. The portion towards the river front rests upon a step bank - only two gates known as Sat Sayyad and Quziwada survive.

Major points of interest include the Dnyaneshwar Udyan - the largest garden in Maharashtra, Nath Mandir and Jayakwadi Dam. Paithani Weaving Center is functioning here.

Aurangabad Railway Station, managed by the South Central Railways, is the nearest railhead. The nearest airport is at Aurangabad.
