Celebrated all over India, this festival marks the beginning of the fishing season. The main deity worshipped on this day is the Sea God, Lord Varuna. Devotees offer coconuts to the Sea God as a token of gratitutde as well as to get blessings.

On the occasion of this festival, decorated coconuts are thrown into the sea with prayers for a plentiful catch. The fishermen decorate their boats. They place lighted oil lamps on the boat, as a part of decoration.

On this day, they sing and dance together. The main dish of the day is coconut rice.
