Solapur




Solapur, an ancient historical and religious place, is famous as a textile-manufacturing center in Maharashtra. It houses cotton mills, powerlooms and production plants for carpets, chemicals, leather goods and metal products. After 1668, Solapur was under the rule of Mughals. The Marathas captured it in 1795 and the British in 1818.

As a famous Jain center, the city features eight Digambara temples and Jain institutions. Two of them are in Sukervar Peth locality and the others in Kasagi, Shravikashram and Bhusari and Seth Sakharamji Temple areas. Boarding and lodging facilities are available at the Nemchand Hirachand Dharmashala. A Muslim fort dating back to 14th century is another specialty. Shri Siddeshwar is worshiped by majority of the people. Nandidhwaj procession on Makara Sankranti fare gathers millions of devotees. Tuljapur and Ganagapur are the nearby places worth visiting. Sholapur Airport and railway station are nearby.
