Nehru Planetarium




Nehru Planetarium is situated at Worli, 8 km from the city center of Mumbai. Rated as the finest planetarium in the country, it is the only astronomical center in the city boasting a concert cum movie auditorium. It is mostly frequented by the school children eager to learn the intricate details of the universe.

Nehru Planetarium was inaugurated by Indira Gandhi, the former prime minister of India, 3rd March, 1977. The building of the planetarium is noted for its large domed structure, which is actually the hemispherical screen used for the shows. This building was designed by J M Kadri, regarded as one of India’s finest architects. Regular shows depicting the mysterious worlds in the outer spaces are held. Also on the display are some fine and rare collections of lunar and astronomical photographs. Of special interest is a collection of cubicles that estimate a person’s weight in each of the nine planets in the solar system.

Shows are held daily, except Mondays, in three languages; Hindi, English and Marathi. Programs like Science quiz, Astro-painting, Science elocution, Astro-poetry and Astro-quiz are other attractions, especially among the student community.

At the basement is the Nehru Auditorium, featuring some of the finest talents in classical music, dance and plays. Adjacent to the planetarium is the Nehru Centre, host to many international trade fairs and exhibition. Also worth a visit is the Nehru Science Museum situated in the vicinity.
