The British-built Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Market in
Mumbai is located at the junction of Dadabhoy Naoroji Road and Carnac Road and is just north of
Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus.
It is primarily a wholesale market containing shops that deal in flowers, fruits, vegetables and other food products, all under a single roof. This grand old building was formerly known by the name Crawford Market, in memory of Arthur Crawford, the erstwhile municipal commissioner.
The building of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Market was constructed in the year 1871. It originally belonged to a noble person named Cowasji Jehangir, who later donated it to the city. A British architect named Lockwood Kipling (father of Rudyard Kipling) designed the outer friezes and the stone fountain situated inside. The building conforms to the Norman Gothic style of architecture.
There is a bas-relief containing the image of Indian peasants working in a wheat field. This building is noted for its tall clock tower and steeple. The overall splendor of this building reminds one of the Victorian era.
