The suburban railway system in
Mumbai is a system of mass transportation offering reliable and comfortable passenger services. It is the most complex and intensively utilized railway system in the world. Mumbai Suburban Railways is managed by the Indian Railways. The Railways has the highest passenger density in the world. It is under the administration of Ministry of Railways, Government of India. To meet the requirements of ever-growing passenger traffic, the Ministry of Railways established the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd (MRVC Ltd), a public sector unit of Government of India.
The Western Railways (WR) and the
Central Railways (CR) operate the Mumbai Suburban Railways. Two rail routes, referred to as Western Line, run from Churchgate terminus up to
Virar. Similarly the two rail routes, referred to as Central Line or Main Line, run from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) to Kalyan.
