Mahabaleshwar, the queen of hill stations in
Maharashtra, is at a distance of 120 km from
Pune. Enriched with forest and wildlife resources, it is about 4500 ft above the sea level. The name is thought to be derived from three Sanskrit words - Maha (great), Bal (power) and Ishwar (God), that all together gives the meaning "The God of great power",
Lord Shiva.
Formerly known as Malcolmpeth, the area is believed to have been founded by Sir John 'Boy' Malcolm - a governor of the British East India Company. It also has a connection with
Shivaji – the founder of Maratha Empire.
With its fresh atmosphere, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, Mahabaleshwar is an ideal hangout for nature lovers. The orchards of strawberries and other continental fruits is a breathtaking view.

Wilson Point, the highest point with an altitude of 4710 ft, is an ideal place to view the panorama of sunrise. Other attractions are Elphinestone point, Castle Rock,
Arthur Seat and Baghdad Point. The gushing waterfalls of Chinaman, Lingmala and Dhobi also attract the tourist. Pratapgad Fort, 24 km from here, is a picturesque spot.
