Nanded District, formerly known as Nanditat, is located in the south-eastern part of the state of
Maharashtra. It is situated on the northern bank of
Godavari River. Nanded is famous for Sikh
Gurdwaras. It is a commercial center and has cotton spinning and weaving mills. It is bordered by
Yavatmal District,
Latur District and
Parbhani District of the state of Maharashtra. Also, the
Adilabad District and
Nizamabad District of
Andhra Pradesh and
Bidar District of
Karnataka State bound the Nanded District. The major folk-arts are Adivasi dance, Gondhal and Shahiri. The temperature ranges from 12
o C to 40
o C. With an area of 10,545 sq km, it has a population of about 2.8 million.
The people of Nanded depend on agriculture for their livelihood. The principal food crops are jowar and rice, and cotton is the basic cash crop. Cotton and oilseed processing industries are common in Nanded. The district receives an average rainfall of about 890 mm. Godavari, Manjara and Penganga are the major rivers. Sachkhand Gurdwara at Nanded, Renuka Devi temple at Mahur, Kandhar fort and Malegaon fair are among the places of tourist attractions.
