Gondiya District is situated in the north-eastern part of the state of
Maharashtra. It is bordered by
Chandrapur District in the south,
Bhandara District in the west, Balaghat District of Madhya Pradesh in the north and Rajnandgaon District of
Chhattisgarh state in the east. The temperature ranges from 7
o C to 44
o C. The district receives an annual rainfall of over 1000 mm. With an area of 4,900 sq km, Gondiya District has a population of over 1.2 million. The languages spoken are
Marathi,
Hindi, Chhatisgadi and Gondi. Dander, Gondi dance, Bhajan and Keertan are the major folk-arts. The main crops are rice, wheat, sugarcane, tur, moong, udad and mustard.
Navegaon dam, Nagzira, Chand-Suraj, Nagra, Itiadoh,
Nagzira Sanctuary, Chulbandh and Navegaon National Park are the major tourist attractions.
