Gol Gumbaz, the glorious tomb of Mohammed Adil Shah, is situated in
Bijapur,
Karnataka. The dome of this 17th century monument is considered to be the world's second largest after St Peter's Basilica of Vatican City, Rome.
This tomb is a well known example of the Islamic Architecture in India. Its unique architecture consists of a simple building having a hall of 1704 sq m in area, buttressed by octagonal seven-storey towers at each of the corners. The acoustical system in the dome is so designed that it reverberates even a faint whisper such that the sound returns to the listener exactly nine times. The monument has a total diameter of 38 m.
