Dnyaneshwari

Common Man’s Bhagavad Gita

Dnyaneshwari is a commentary on the Bhagavad Gita. Saint Dnyaneshwar composed this work at the age of 16, during the 13th century, under the guidance of his elder brother and guru, Nivruttinath. Written in Marathi, it is an attempt to bring the philosophy of the ancient text to the common man. Originally called Bhavarthadeepika, it also contains 18 chapters, similar to the Bhagavad Gita.

Dnyaneshwari acts as a guide for those seeking spiritual satisfaction. It discusses four different paths of life; path of knowledge, path of action, path of yoga and path of devotion. A person can choose any of these depending on his mentality. The book brings forth the principles of the Vedanta philosophy, Sankhya philosophy, Kundalini yoga and the practice of devotion. Various examples and events borrowed from daily life presents the ideas in a simpler and clear manner to the common man.
