Greater Mumbai District




Greater Mumbai District spans an area of 438 sq km. The district, which includes Mumbai city, is the leading financial center of India as well as a major national commercial, transportation and manufacturing hub. It has one of the world’s largest harbors.

Majority of the population are Parsis. The main language spoken is English. Others include Marathi, Gujarati, Urdu, Hindi, Tamil, Sindhi and Punjabi.

Mumbai is a prime center of tourists. The main tourist attractions are Gateway of India, Colonial monuments including the Presidency Secretariat (built in a Venetian Gothic style), the University Hall (in a 15th-century French style), the University Library and Rajabai Clock Tower and the High Court. The Malabar hill area is also a tourist spot with attractions such as the Elephanta cave temples dating back to the 8th century. Other places of interest are the Parsi Towers of Silence, a sacred place where the Parsi people lay out their dead, Hindu Babulnath Temple, the Hanging Gardens and Kamala Nehru Park.
