Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the northern part of
Western Ghats. It covers about 130 sq km of area and vegetation consists of southern tropical semi-evergreen forest. It spreads over the three districts of
Pune,
Thane and
Raigad in
Maharashtra.
Leopards, barking deer, sambar deer, wild boar, langur and hyena can be spotted here. Birds include Malabar grey hornbill, quaker babbler, Malabar whistling thrush, green pigeon, black eagle and grey jungle fowl. Important tourist attractions within sanctuary area include Bhimashankar Temple, Bombay point and Gupta Bhimesh. Dimbhe dam, a picnic spot, is around 40 km from sanctuary.
The best time to visit this place is from October to May.
The sanctuary is around 125 km from Pune via Manchar. The nearest airport is at Pune. Karjat Railway Station is the nearest railhead.
