Sua Dance

Sugga Dance

Sua is a folk dance performed in Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. It is danced, exclusively by women, on the occasion of Goura marriage in the month of October and November.

The name sua literarily means parrot, so the dance is also known as parrot dance. During the performance, the women bend and jerk their heads like the bird and lift their feet imagining the parrot-walk.

In addition, the women prepare a wooden parrot and place it on an earthen pot covered with paddy shoots. One girl carries the pot on her head and stands at the middle facing the dancing row. Thiski, a wooden clapper, is the only instrument used for this dance.
