Dr Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya, formerly University of Saugar, was established in 1946. This is the oldest and the biggest university of
Madhya Pradesh, situated about 5 km east of
Sagar on the top of Patharia hills.
It has about 36 teaching departments, 10 faculties and 81 affiliated colleges covering six revenue districts of Madhya Pradesh. The university offers degrees in fields such as geology, pharmacy, criminology and forensic science, anthropology, performing arts, journalism and mass communication, adult education, electronics, business management, microbiology, biotechnology and computer applications.
The Jawaharlal Nehru library of the university has a collection of about 3,10,000 books.
