Mandsaur District is situated in the northern part of
Madhya Pradesh. It covers an area of 5,530 sq km with a population of a million. Mandsaur is known for its archaeological and historical heritage. The main language used is
Malvi, a mixture of
Rajasthani and
Hindi. The district takes its name from the headquarters town,
Mandsaur.
The climate is dry except during the south-west monsoon (July to September). Pashupatinath temple, Bahi Parashnath Jain Temple and Gandhi Sagar Dam (constructed across the river Chambal) are major tourist attractions. Mandsaur is well-known for the large production of opium. The slate pencil industry is the main industry.
