Founded in 1979, National Chambal Sanctuary, on the Chambal River, is located in the districts of
Agra and
Etawah. It forms part of a large area, and is co-administered by
Rajasthan,
Madhya Pradesh and
Uttar Pradesh.
National Chambal Sanctuary was primarily formed to protect the Chambal river, which is the basis for the entire wildlife of the sanctuary. The sanctuary protects a variety of aquatic life such as the Ganges river dolphin, crocodile, freshwater turtles, and river otters, along with a variety of fishes. There is a crocodile center located at Deori. Bar-headed geese, brahmini ducks, common teals, pelicans, flamingoes and cormorants are the main birds.
Motor boats are available for tourists to go around the sanctuary. Best time to visit is from November to April. Accommodation can be arranged at forest rest houses in Etawah and Baiwan.
The sanctuary, by road, is 70 km from Agra and 5 km from Etawah. The nearest airport and railway station are at Agra.
