Narmada Udgam, the source of the sacred
Narmada River, is situated at
Amarkantak in the
Shahdol District of
Madhya Pradesh. It is one of the holiest places in India. There is a temple dedicated to the goddess Narmada. The temple houses a black basalt stone idol of Narmada.
Mahashivaratri and Nagarpanchami are celebrated here annually.
Ruins of several ancient temples can be seen here. Kapildhara and
Dugdhdhara waterfalls are about 12 km away.
Brighu Kamandal and
Dhuni Pani are the main tourist attractions.
