Famed for the
Sun Temple, Konark is located 33 km east of
Puri and 64 km north of
Bhubaneswar in
Orissa. A place with great historical and religious importance it is also known as ‘Arka-Tirtha’.
The major interests in Konark, apart from the Sun Temple, are the archaeological survey of India museum,
Chaurasi, Ramchandi Beach,
Konark Beach and Balighai Beach. Kuruma, a little village 8 km away, is famous for the images of seated
Buddha. The Konark Dance Festival, held in the first week of December annually, brings together renowned dancers from all over India. Chandrabagha Fair or Magha Saptami Mela a religious congregation held here annually in February draws huge crowd.
Kakatapur, Pipli, Puri and Astranga are the major getaways from Konark.
The nearest airport is at Bhubaneswar. The nearby rail links are Puri and Bhubaneswar. Konark is linked to Puri and Bhubaneswar by road.
