Lal Bagh Palace, built during the rule of Holkars in between 1886-1921, is the showpiece of
Indore. It was designed by the Triggs of
Kolkata. Spread over an area of 28 hectares, Lal Bagh Palace is a brilliant blend of traditional motifs and modern conveniences.
Cast in iron and brought from England, the entrance gates of the palace are reminiscent of those found in Buckingham Palace, London. The billiard room is noted for its jewel-encrusted portraits of Tukoji Rao, who completed the palace. Spring-mounted floor in ballroom, marble columns, chandeliers, stained glass windows and stuffed tigers add to the splendor of the palace. Noteworthy among the features is a rose garden, which is considered to be the best in the country.
The restored rooms within the palace now function as a museum. It exhibits a varied variety of furniture and their ornamentation in the late Regency and early Gregorian styles. There are two attractive rooms, which completely display the articles of the Mughal era. The coin collections on the first floor dates back to the early Muslim period. Among the unique displays are Italian sculptures and intricately inlaid boxes. Other exhibits include prehistoric artifacts, miniatures and contemporary Indian paintings.
The palace is open on all days except Mondays. Visiting hour: 10:00 - 17:00 hrs.
