According to Hindu mythology, apsaras, known as the 'daughters of joy,' are celestial dancers. Legend has it that the apsaras emerged along with other treasures during the churning of the ocean of milk. Apsaras are described as very beautiful female spirits, commonly water nymphs or forest spirits, and are the wives of
Gandharvas. Apsaras are said to accompany
Kamadeva during his endeavors of love, as they are said to inspire love.
Urvasi, Rambha, Thilothama and Menaka are the four apsaras mentioned in the
Vedas. They are believed to entertain Lord Indra in heaven. Figures of apsaras are carved on temple walls and they are usually depicted in sensuous poses.
