Karera Bird Sanctuary, established in 1981, is situated in
Raisen District,
Madhya Pradesh. Spread over an area of 202 sq km, it is a natural habitat for a variety of flora and fauna. The vegetation is reverie and swamp with mixed deciduous forests.
Major bird species found here include
Great Indian Bustard, pintails, river terns, cormorants, grey herons, Indian darters, ibis and egrets. It is also a heaven for migratory birds during seasons. The sanctuary is one of the last refuges of the Great Indian Bustard.
Dihaila Jheel (lake) in the sanctuary is the main water source for its inhabitants.
The best time to visit the sanctuary is from January to June.
Madhav Shivpuri National Park is about 45 km from
Karera.
The nearest airport is at Gwalior. Jhansi Junction Railway Station is the nearest railhead. The sanctuary can be reached from
Shivpuri Bus Station.
