Khandwa District is situated to the south-west of
Madhya Pradesh. Located 900 m above the sea level, it is called the gateway to south India. Khandwa lies on the uplands between the valleys of the two major rivers, the
Narmada and
Tapti, which flow parallel to each other from east to west. Khandwa has an area of 6,200 sq km and a population of 1.2 million. It shares the boundaries with the districts of
Betul,
Hoshanagabad,
Burhanpur,
Khargone and
Dewas. The climate is pleasant and healthy.
Hindi is the popular medium of communication in the urban parts. Nimari is spoken in the rural areas in the north-west parts whereas Korku and
Bhili are the languages in the tribal area. Gujarati and
Rajasthani are spoken in several social circles.
The important tourist destinations are Omkareshwar (one among the 12
jyotirlingas),
Ghantaghar, Dada Dhuniwale Darbar, Harsud, Siddhanath Temple and Veerkhala Rook.
