Nilgai (Boselaphus tragocamelus) is the largest of all Asiatic antelopes common in hills sparsely dotted with trees, level or undulating plains covered with grass, patches of scrub, dry deciduous and thorn forests at an elevation less than 600 m. It is an awkward looking animal fairly horse like, with high withers and low rump.
The adult bull is characterized by a coarse iron-gray coat, a white ring below each foot lock, stout cone-like horns and two white spots on each cheek. The males have a distinctive tuft of stiff black hairs on the throat. They will live for long periods without water. They form groups of 4 to 10, sometimes 20. It commonly feeds on leaves and fruits of Ber (Zizyphus) and other trees.
Their gestation period is about 247 days; and one to two young ones are delivered.
