Etawah is situated on the banks of the
Yamuna River, in south-central
Uttar Pradesh and is 122 km northeast of
Agra. It is the administrative headquarters of
Etawah District.
The town is divided into old town (south) and new town (north) by the river.
Rajputs ruled the city for 400 years before coming under the
Mughal regime in the 16th century. By the 17th century, the town became a nerve center for commerce and trade in the state.
Etawah is home to many cotton and silk weaving industries, oilseed mills and is an important market for `ghee' (clarified butter) as well. The town also has one of the biggest `khoya' (sweet meat) markets in the state.
The ruins of a 15th century fort and a cluster of surrounding temples are worth a visit at Etawah.
Nearest airport is at Agra.
Etawah Railway Station is the terminus point of the rail line from Agra. Lucknow is 175 km southeast of Etawah.
