Vidisha, the ancient commercial city, is the seat of administration of
Vidisha District, in
Madhya Pradesh. It is located near the confluence of the
Betwa and Bes rivers, about 53 km south-east of
Bhopal.
The land, also known as Besnagar, was the center for various cultures from the Mauryan to the Mughal periods, which is evident from the remains discovered in and around the town.
Places of tourist interest are Vidisha Museum, Khamba Baba, Udaigiri Caves and Reclining Vishnu (a Brahmanical structure). A trip to Gyaraspur Mahadevi Temple, Udayeshwar Temple, Heliodorus Pillar and Neelakantheshwara Temple will be an enchanting experience.
Nearest airport is the Bhopal Airport. Vidisha Railway Station is on the main Delhi-Chennai main line of the West Central Railways. From Vidisha Bus Station, regular buses are available to Udaypur, Gyaraspur, Sanchi and Bhopal.
