Barkatullah University, formerly known as Bhopal University, was established in 1970. It is located along
Bhopal-Hoshangabad highway, about 3 km from the Habibganj railway crossing.
The university is named as the Barkatullah Vishwavidyalaya, after the great freedom fighter, Prof Barkatuallah, in 1988. Its territorial jurisdiction extends to the eight districts of Bhopal, Sehore, Vidisha, Raisen, Hoshangabad, Harda, Betul and Rajgarh.
More than 170 colleges are affiliated to the university. Besides, one engineering college, two college of education, a technical teachers training institute, ayurvedic, unani, physiotherapy and homeopathic college are affiliated to this university. Education by distance mode offers programs at graduation and post graduation level.
