Anuppur District

A tribal dominated district



Anuppur is a newly formed district in Madhya Pradesh. This district was split from Shahdol District. Situated in the north-eastern part of Madhya Pradesh, it has a total area of 3,701 sq km. The district is bounded by Koriya District of Chhattisgarh in the east, Umaria District in the west, Shahdol District in the north and Dindori District and Bilaspur District of Chhattisgarh in the south.

Anuppur District has a total population of about 6,67,155. With a temperate climate, the district's temperature remains the highest in the month of June and the lowest in the month of January. The temperature ranges from 46° C to 2.6° C. The Narmada River originates from Amarkantak situated on the Maikal Hill Range. Son, Johila, Tipan, Bakan and Kewai are the major rivers flowing through this district. The main trees found in this area include Sal Amla, Teak, Sarai and Shisham. The tribal people uses Mahua flower for making wine. The district has a rich deposite of coal, bauxite and fire clay.

The tribals of Anuppur District have a simple living standard. They live in houses made of mud, bamboo sticks, paddy straw and local tiles. Tribal men wear Dhoti, Bandi, Fatohi and head gear and women wear saree named 'kaansh'.

Narmada Kund, Mai Ki Bagiya, Brighu Kamandal, Jwaleshwar Mahadev, Kapildhara Waterfalls, Dugdhdhara Waterfalls and Sarvodya Jain Temple are the worth-visiting sites.

Anuppur is the seat of administration of Anuppur District. Anuppur Junction Railway Station serves the district.
