Dhar




Dhar is the district administrative center of the Dhar District. The town was the capital of Paramara Rajputs and a center of Hindu learning from the 9th to 14th century. The town was in the forefront during the First War of Independence in 1857. Dhar is 60 km west of Indore.

Dhar is a major agricultural center and the chief industries are cotton ginning and handicraft weaving. Important landmarks are the Mandav, the Darwazas, Royal Enclave (Jahaj Mahal), Hindola Mahal, Hoshang Shah's Tomb, Jami Masjid and Bagh Caves. The nearest airport and railway station are at Indore. National Highway 59 passes through Dhar.
