Chitrakut (also spelt Chitrakoot) is one of the important districts in
Uttar Pradesh. It is bordered in the north by
Kaushambi District, in the east by
Allahabad District, in the west by
Banda District, and in the south by
Satna District and
Rewa District of
Madhya Pradesh. The population is over .8 million, distributed over an area of 3,513 sq km.
Chitrakut is the district headquarters.
According to the
Ramayana, it was here that
Lord Ram, his spouse
Sita, and his brother
Lakshman stayed during their exile for about twelve years.
Some of the important rivers are the
Yamuna,
Mandakini (Paishwani), Gunta, Bagein, Ohan, Balmiki, and Bardaha. Ramayan Mela, Chitrakut Mahotsava,
diwali, and Amavasya are some of the important festivals.
