Hazrat Ubaidullah, an Arab saint, is believed to have propagated Islam in
Lakshadweep. According to local populace, he came here in the 7th century AD.
Once while praying at Mecca, Ubaidullah fell asleep. Then Prophet Mohammed appeared in his dream and asked him to leave for distant shores to propagate Islam. In accordance with this, he left the place and after months of sailing, he finally reached Lakshadweep.
In spite of general apposition, he preached Islam in Amini and Andrott islands and ultimately succeeded in converting entire population to Islam. Hameedat Beebi was his wife. It is believed that mosques at Amini, Kalpeni, Agatti and Kavaratti were built by him.
The Tomb of Hazrat Ubaidullah is enshrined at Andrott Island. Urs Festival, celebrated in commemoration of the saint, attracts devotees from far and near.
