Also known as Devil dancers, the Velans are one of the predominant performers of
Theyyam in the northern districts of
Kerala. Besides Velans,
Malayans and
Vannans also perform this dance form. It is believed that while performing Theyyam, the souls of the dead heroes of the land and the gods and goddesses come and converse with the people through the medium of the possessed dancers.
