Madrassa, also spelt madrasa, madrash or madressa, is the Islamic school for Muslims where Islam is taught in great detail. Madrassas are found either attached to the mosques or near the mosques. The word 'madrassa' means 'school'. Both males and females attend traditional madrassas. Madrassas offer two courses - 'hifz' and 'alim'. The 'hifz' course is to study Koran and become a hafiz and the 'alim' course is to become a scholar or mullah.
The curriculum of a Madrassa includes learning Arabic, Koran memorization and interpretation, Islamic law, hadith and the history of Islam. Some of the Madrassas teach additional courses such as Arabic literature, English, science and history.
