With an eminent history and culture, Payyanur is located in the valley of
Ezhimala Hills and was a part of the erstwhile Ezhimala kingdom. Payyanur was one among the '64 manigramas' (villages) formed by Brahmins. In the past, famous travelers visited this place and it is widely noted in their works. It is located in
Kannur District and is around 45 km north of
Kannur.
Designation of Lord Muruga, 'Payyan' and the word instead of place, 'Ooru', together composed the name 'Payyanur'. The place is honored with a Sree Subramanya Swami Temple, thus meaning the land of Lord Subramanya (Muruga). This area is famous for the Payyannur Pavithra Mothiram and art forms such as Theyyam and Poorakkali.
Nearest airport is at Mangalore(120 km). Payyanur Railway Station is on the
Kozhikode-Mangalore line.
National Highway 17 passes through Payyanur.
