Located in
Thrissur District of
Kerala, Wadakanchery is 18 km north of
Thrissur. (There is another '
Vadakkancheri' in
Palakkad District.) This is one of the prosperous towns of Iyers, a community in Kerala. Folklore has it that this land was gifted by Puzakkiledam Raja, one of the chieftains of Palakkad Raja, on lease to the Iyers.
The tourist attractions in and around Wadakanchery are Lakshmi Narayana Perumal Temple, Kerala Kalamandalam, Guruvayoorappan Temple, Vazhani Dam, Sree Ruthira Mahakalikavu Temple, Veloor Church, Panchakarama Ayurveda Research Centre and Panjal - village of Yagas.
Machattu Mamangam, the five day annual festival at the Machattu Thiruvanikavu Temple in Thrissur, is also noteworthy.
