Alavattam is a circular, ceremonial fan used during elephant processions in
Kerala. The fan is decorated with concentric rings of peacock feathers radiating towards the edge. It forms the third row of the ritual display on the back of the elephant. It is raised at intervals with the beat of
Panchavadyam and serves to highlight the airy, white
Venchamaram in front.
The Thrissur Pooram is perhaps the best occasion to watch an alavattam display.
