Striped-necked Mongoose (Herpestes vitticollis) is the largest and heavily built mongoose, which lives in
Western Ghats and other in
Karnataka and
Kerala.
It is identifiable from other species of mongoose by a black stripe. The length is about 43 to 53 cm. The tail is longer than the body and is jet black at tip. The mongoose is also seen in swamps and rice fields.
It feeds on frogs and crabs.
Striped-necked mongoose can be seen in Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, Kerala and Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary, Karnataka.
