Originally known as University of Cochin, Cochin University of Science and Technology was established in 1971. It is situated 10 km north of
Ernakulam and 20 km south of
Cochin International Airport. The main campus has 14 teaching and research departments, 8 auxiliary institutions, 5 hostels, guest house, visiting faculty complex, computer center, central library, staff quarters, post office, bank, health center, telecom center, play grounds, courts and a gymnasium. Another campus of university is located at Ernakulam and houses the School of Marine Sciences, the School of Environmental Studies and the Department of Industrial and men's hostel. It offers graduate programs and post graduate programs in frontier areas of science and technology.
The university has a chess club, which is the first private Chess Club in
Kerala to conduct a FIDE Rated Open Chess Tournament. It offers chess coaching classes and conducts different types of tournaments. Besides, the university features a computer center and a library.
