A serene hill station in the
Western Ghats, Ponmudi (literally meaning golden hair) is located 60 km from
Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of
Kerala. It is placed at an altitude of 1,100 ft above the sea level. Kannikar (a tribe) are the main inhabitants.
Blessed with lush green surroundings, hill trails, beautiful streams and a variety of rare butterflies and orchids, Ponmudi is ideal for trekking and hiking. The hairpin bends, tea-estates and mist covered valleys make it more attractive. An array of restaurants, hotels and cottages are there to cater to dining and accommodation needs. Besides, a small deer park is nearby.
The prime sites enroute to Ponmudi are Kallar River and Meenmutty Falls. Thenmala (70 km),
Agastyakoodam (60 km) and
Neyyar Dam (80 km) are around. Ponmudi is ideal all year round except during monsoons. The nearest rail terminus and airport are at Thiruvananthapuram.
