Coir, indigenous fiber of kerala, is extracted from the out covering of the coconut. The husks are separated from the nuts, and are retted in lagoons for a few months. The retted husks are then beaten with wooden mallets manually to produce the fiber. The fiber is later spun into a range of textured yarn on traditional spinning wheels called 'ratts'. Later it is dyed and weaved into numerous shades and length.
A variety of coir is produced and is used for industrial, agricultural and domestic purposes. Coir making is a cottage industry in
Kerala and it can found along the backwaters.
