Also known as kalamezhuthu Pattu, Kalampattu is a folk art form of northern
Kerala. The words 'Kalam' in Malayalam stands for drawing and 'Pattu' means song. This 600-year-old ritual is performed by a group of five to fifteen people in
Bhadrakali and
Ayyappa temples of Kerala. The ritual is performed around the
kolam drawn on the floor, using five colors. The performance lasts through the night. A series of special songs, kalampattu, are sung to the accompaniment of nanthuni and
Ilathalam.
