Nehru Trophy Boat Race

Nehru Trophy Boat Race is a major aquatic festival celebrated on the Punnamada Kayal in Alappuzha. Every year, this striking water sport is conducted on the second Saturday of August.

The huge snake shaped boats called the Chundans, representing various villages in Kerala, gather on this day for an impressive race. The race is accompanied by a rhythmic music that inspires the rowers. People throng here to enjoy and to be a part of this sportive event. Besides, it is a spectacular and a rare sight for the tourist.

The winners are awarded the Nehru Trophy, which was donated by late Jawaharlal Nehru during the first boat race held in 1952. The trophy has the shape of a snake boat fixed on a wooden frame, with the signature of Jawaharlal Nehru.
