Mayyanad

Mayyanad, situated on the banks of the Paravur Lake, is a picturesque village in Kollam District of Kerala. It is about 10 kilometers south of Kollam. Kottiyam and Paravur are the nearest towns.

‘Mayyam’ meaning 'middle,' gave the name Mayyanad for that region, because of its location in the middle of the erstwhile Venadu. Mayyanad is also related with the ‘Mayyanad Ellam’ who were the rulers of this place during the eighteenth century. Valiyavila Madan Nada is the famous Hindu temple situated here. It is believed that Sree Sankaracharya had built a shrine in this village. The village also has many churches and mosques. Fishing and coir-making are the main ocuupations of this region.

Mayyanad is also famous by the fact that the Malayalam daily, Kerala Kaumudi was started from Mayyanad in 1911.
